Have you ever woken up in a cold sweat worrying about work?

Have you ever been unable to think about what you are working on because you were worrying about something?

Have you ever been paralyzed due to anxiety?

" Anxiety is a lot like a toddler. It never stops talking. telling you that you are wrong about everything and wakes you up at 3:00 A.M."

Anxiety is a responsibility we take upon ourselves that we were never intended to have. The reason anxiety takes a stronghold on our lives is because we allow it. It is a seed that is planted in our minds that grows as we continual to feed it with our self-talk and thoughts. What we dwell on in our thoughts will spring to life and convince us we are useless, helpless, and unable to be successful. Anxiety often disguises itself as a fog preventing us from knowing there is great things ahead. It stops us in our tracks and we believe we can't move forward.

Arizona experiences massive dust storms called Haboobs. Haboobs are massive dust storms that are thousands of feet high and span a mile or more. When they build, they slowly move across Arizona. I have had the experience of driving on the freeway as one of these massive storms crippled the freeway. Often the only visibility is the 2 red lights on the rear of the car in front of you. When you are caught in one of these dust storms, you feel surrounded and unable to escape. There is only one way to get out of the storm, just keep driving. Either the dust storm will pass over you, or you will drive out of the storm.

The storms we have in our lives are often temporary. We get through them over time or they pass over and we move on in life. We can't control the storm or circumstance, we can control our reaction to it. When we understand circumstances come and go, we continue toward our goal. When we allow the circumstances to stop us, we believe we are unable to continue. When we believe the circumstance is in control, we will stop and not continue, or be derailed into a wrong direction.

There are 3 steps in avoiding being controlled by circumstances:

  1. When the circumstances arrive, focus on your goal not on the circumstance.
  2. Don't dwell on what we can't achieve, focus on what we have achieved.
  3. Don't believe you are at the mercy of the circumstance, believe you are in control of your future.

Self-Talk is the source of anxiety. We can't control what circumstances arrive on our journey, we can control what we think about the circumstance. Often self-talk originates from past experiences. We allow the failures from the past to cloud our future significance by reliving our fears in the present. When we control what we think and not allow our thoughts to sabotage, we will believe we are capable to achieve significance and not quit in our disbelief. Belief and feelings are reflected in our actions. Actions will always produce a successful outcome.
